Subscriptions: The High Tech Information Gathering of their Day
At the time of the revolution, neither the Internet nor CNN were available to report on the struggle in Boston or Gettysburg. Communities like Edenton had only one way to keep current on the war, they created a subscription. Subscriptions were used from time to time and were fairly simple systems, a number of individuals would pledge to pay a certain amount to hire and provision a rider to go to the scene of curiosity, gather the news and return to Edenton.
Such subscription systems were used during the War of Independence, the framing of the Constitution at Philadelphia and during the Civil War.
